Paul Frederick Rule is The Pirate's father. He was born in Norfolk, Virginia on the 5th of September in 1937 and died in Morehead City, North Carolina on the 24th of March in 2011. Through Paul Rule, The Pirate has two half-brothers, Rick and Erick, and one half-sister, Lori. Paul is buried in Ocean View Cemetery in Beaufort, North Carolina.

Paul was the only child of parents, Fred Lee Rule and Lelia Hudgins. During his senior year at Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake, Va., he and a fellow student started a radio station for the school. The station, WFOS 90.5 FM, is still in operation today. Mr. Rule graduated from the UNC-Chapel Hill with a degree in journalism and earned a master's degree in education and mass communications from William and Mary University in Williamsburg, Va.. He was president of Marquest, a media and entertainment research company.
